Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.\n\nAt such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.\n\nThe Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.\n\n**Your support makes all the difference.**\n\nStanding on stage next to [Jannik Sinner](https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/jannik-sinner) during the Australian Open’s trophy ceremony, [Alexander Zverev](https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/alexander-zverev) believed[that a first grand slam title was a world away](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/alexander-zverev-grand-slam-final-defeats-australian-open-b2686568.html). “Today he completely outplayed me,” Zverev said after losing his third grand slam final. “I’m serving better than him, but that’s it. He does everything else better than me. He moves better than me. He hits his forehand better than me. He hits his backhand better than me. He returns better than me. He volleys better than me. He’s in a different universe right now to anyone else.”\n\nThat was in January 2025. Fast forward to April 2026, and not much had changed. In Madrid, as Sinner and Zverev once again stood side by side during a trophy presentation, the world No 1 appeared to be on another planet; his 6-1, 6-2 victory[in just 57 minutes](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/jannik-sinner-alexander-zverev-madrid-open-final-masters-b2969794.html) continued his dominant clay-court stretch, and extended his winning run against the German. It was Zverev’s ninth consecutive defeat to the 24-year-old Sinner, and a sixth in a row without winning a set.\n\nZverev lost a ninth consecutive match against Sinner in the Madrid Open final(Getty)\n\nSinner and Zverev arrived at the French Open the following month as the top two seeds but a world apart. Sinner was the biggest pre-tournament favourite at Roland Garros since a prime Rafael Nadal, with Zverev an afterthought.\n\nSinner and Zverev [meet again on Sunday in the Wimbledon final](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/sinner-zverev-wimbledon-final-start-time-tv-b3013120.html), but after two weeks in Paris, that may have changed everything. Sinner’s dream of completing the career grand slam evaporated in the red dirt [as he suffered an unthinkable collapse](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/jannik-sinner-french-open-favourite-prediction-result-b2985376.html) in his second-round defeat to Juan Manuel Cerundolo, his winning streak grinding to a halt under the intense heat. It cleared the path for Zverev to[end his long quest to win a first grand slam title](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/french-open-final-alexander-zverev-flavio-cobolli-b2991292.html), with the 29-year-old defeating Flavio Cobolli in five sets in the final.\n\nFreed from the burden of being the best player in the world yet to have won a grand slam title, following defeats in his first three major finals, Zverev has returned to Wimbledon transformed. At what was historically his worst grand slam, having failed to advance further than the fourth round in nine previous attempts, Zverev’s shoulders have relaxed, he has stood taller, and he has deployed his powerful game to cruise through the draw. In the semi-finals, he stamped [his newfound authority over Arthur Fery](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/arthur-fery-alexander-zverev-wimbledon-semi-final-result-score-b3012732.html), squashing the British wildcard’s fairytale.","source_name":"The Independent","source_url":"https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/jannik-sinner-alexander-zverev-wimbledon-preview-prediction-b3013130.html","url":"https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/jannik-sinner-alexander-zverev-wimbledon-preview-prediction-b3013130.html","author":"Jamie Braidwood","author_name":"Jamie Braidwood","published_at":"2026-07-11T18:55:04.000Z","publication_date":"2026-07-11T18:55:04.000Z","image_url":"https://static.independent.co.uk/2026/07/11/16/2285621418..","category":"sport","topic":"sport","tags":[],"political_bias":null,"bias_score":null,"confidence_score":null,"credibility_score":null,"factual_quality":null,"reading_time":4,"word_count":732,"view_count":0,"breaking":false,"breaking_news":false,"ai_analysis":null,"fact_check_status":"unverified","archive_status":"hot"}}
