* Aaron Strachan, 21, who abducted and raped a 15-year-old girl at knifepoint in [Edinburgh](https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/edinburgh), attempted to escape custody. * Footage shows Strachan freeing his hands from cuffs and fleeing while being led to a prison van outside the [Court of Session](https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/court-of-session) in January. * He was recaptured in Edinburgh a few hours later, with his lawyer stating the escape was an 'impulsive' act due to loose handcuffs. * Strachan pleaded guilty to the rape and two assaults in December 2025, and later admitted attempting to defeat the ends of justice. * He received an order for lifelong restriction with a minimum of five years in custody, with the judge indicating he may never be released.
