U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday what he called the "most crushing economic operation ever taken" against any country, after Iran "tragically" failed to reach a deal with Washington. The announcement came after a 60-day ceasefire expired Monday with no diplomatic or military off-ramp to the escalating conflict.
"This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale," Trump wrote on Truth Social, warning that any country supporting Tehran or providing "any type of lifeline to Iran" would face "tremendous economic consequences." The President also claimed "No one has given the Islamic Republic of Iran a greater opportunity to make a Deal than me."
The 60-day period had provided Iran and the U.S. a window to negotiate a settlement, but administration officials indicated no breakthrough was achieved before the deadline passed. The threat marks a significant escalation in the administration's pressure campaign against Tehran, extending economic warfare threats to third-party nations.
Meanwhile, the bilateral relationship between the U.S. and Canada has soured significantly, with Trump reviving proposals to construct the Keystone XL pipeline—a project first proposed two decades ago that faced prolonged political opposition.
Separately, the longtime publisher of Stars and Stripes, the U.S. military's independent newspaper, resigned amid the Trump administration's push for editorial control over the publication.
