Political newcomer Darline Graham won the Republican primary runoff in South Carolina for U.S. Senate on Tuesday, according to U.S. media projections. Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, defeated Rep. Ralph Norman in the snap election.
The victory is seen as a significant win for U.S. President Donald Trump, who had endorsed Graham early on. Trump's support comes after a string of his endorsed candidates faced setbacks in recent weeks, and he actively campaigned for Graham, including encouraging her to enter the race.
In other news, California Governor Gavin Newsom stated he believes Trump will restart trade talks with Canada in 'a matter of days'. Newsom suggested that internal pressure from within the Republican Party would compel Trump to return to the negotiating table after talks abruptly ended last week.
Meanwhile, B.C. Premier David Eby suggested that retaliation against the U.S. should include non-tariff measures. Eby proposed walking away from purchasing American fighter jets and hampering the shipping of Montana’s thermal coal as potential actions. Alberta retailers are also reported to be bracing for the impact of tariffs.
