FCT Minister Nyesom Wike launched a sharp attack on All Progressives Congress governors, labeling them "politically lazy" for their resistance to his Rainbow Coalition ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections. The governors, chaired by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, have declared they will not participate in or endorse any alliance they believe threatens President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's re-election.
The Rainbow Coalition, promoted by Wike as a political vehicle for the 2027 polls, has faced internal party opposition. Uzodimma, speaking on behalf of the APC governors, stated they would not support any coalition arrangement that could undermine the current administration.
The conflict adds to existing tensions within Nigeria's political establishment as the country approaches the 2027 electoral cycle. Wike's public dismissal of the governors' position underscores deepening fractures within the ruling APC ahead of what promises to be a highly contested election year.
Meanwhile, the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, offered a contrasting perspective, urging opposition parties to avoid being "extremely critical" of the ruling party. The Benin monarch called on Nigerians to support continuity in governance, arguing that opposition should focus on constructive engagement rather than outright confrontation.
