The US House of Representatives passed a bipartisan sanctions package targeting Russia and Iran, sending the legislation to President Donald Trump. The bill locks in punitive economic measures against Iran for five years per The National and imposes new sanctions on Russia. It is named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham, a critic of Russia.
The measure passed the lower chamber with a 262-159 vote per The National after clearing the Senate. This legislation marks the first time in more than two years that Congress has passed a bill supporting Ukraine. DW News reports it is the most substantial legislative effort against Moscow since Trump returned to the White House.
Provisions within the bill could lead to secondary sanctions targeting India, China, and Iran. The package aims to tighten economic pressure on Moscow amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Separately, Trump threatened the European Union with further sanctions regarding Canada. The EU signaled Canada is poised to become the bloc's first associate member. Trump described the potential move as "laughable" and a "hostile act."
