The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill imposing new sanctions on Russia with 262 lawmakers voting in favor and 159 against. The legislation targets Russia’s energy and defense industries, as well as its “shadow fleet” of tankers that evade existing sanctions. The Senate approved the bill in early August, and it now goes to President Donald Trump.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the new sanctions on Russian oil and gas exports would hinder negotiations to end Russia’s war with Ukraine. "The introduction of some additional sanctions by the U.S. will definitely complicate efforts to find a peaceful settlement in Ukraine," Peskov said, adding that the Kremlin is closely following the bill’s progress.
Many Democratic lawmakers supported the bill, which the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham had been lobbying for over the past year, per CNN. American media have dubbed it the "sanctions bill from hell."
Meanwhile, Russia lost nearly 2,000 troops in Ukraine in a single day, according to Ukrinform.
