The CEOs of OpenAI and Anthropic addressed the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, issuing stark warnings about the potential dangers of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said, "If managed poorly, I even believe AI could be a risk to humanity as a whole," emphasizing that without robust safeguards and human control, AI systems could threaten civilization.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called for international cooperation on AI governance, pushing back against what he described as a "globalist scheme" that former President Trump had rebuffed. Altman has previously argued that AI companies should moderate the pace of development to better manage potential risks.

The testimony comes as the US and China reportedly work to establish a dedicated communication channel — an AI hotline — to manage national security concerns surrounding the technology. Both nations are racing to achieve dominance in the AI industry while seeking ways to communicate on security issues.

At the state level, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has established an AI cabinet within Illinois, responding to mounting calls for greater regulation of the technology. The move signals growing institutional recognition of the need for coordinated governance of AI systems.
