President Trump on Saturday rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week if the U.S. meets certain conditions, calling the deal "not acceptable." The Iranian proposal is similar to a memorandum of understanding agreed upon by the U.S. and Iran in June, according to NPR.
Trump told reporters at the White House that he would like to make a deal but emphasized the proposed terms were unacceptable. The BBC reports Trump said Tehran only put forward the proposal because it is losing the war.
Iran International reports Trump also indicated he expects strikes to occur after the midterm elections. The proposal was intended to reopen the strategic waterway and put an end to hostilities.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global oil shipment route. Trump’s rejection escalates tensions as negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program and regional influence remain deadlocked.
