Israel held national memorial ceremonies on Monday for those killed in the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks and soldiers who died in the subsequent war in Gaza, as reported by Israeli media.
Two state ceremonies took place at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem with President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials in attendance. Flags at state institutions, police stations, prisons and military bases were lowered to half-mast. The memorial fell on October 5 due to the Hebrew calendar.
The Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 killed some 1,200 people in Israel and took another 251 hostages into Gaza. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust. The European Union, United States, Germany and other countries classify Hamas as a terrorist organization.
The attack triggered an Israeli military offensive in Gaza that has killed more than 73,650 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
